Knik to Kenai Natural Science Camp, June 3-9, 2024

Students ages 13 and up are invited to join us for a fun adventure that starts at the Knik Glacier and ends in Seward.

Join us for a 7 day natural science camp that starts with a tour of the Knik Glacier and ends at Millers Landing in Seward, AK. Students have the opportunity to earn science credit towards high school graduation. Students will participate in lessons on glaciers, ecology, marine biology, plant and animal identification through this experiential based field camp.

The camp begins in Anchorage and after introductions we’ll travel north to spend 1 night at the Knik Glacier. We’ll travel by boat and trail to the glacier where we’ll explore the unique geological and ecological setting of the Knik Glacier and adjacent Lake George National Natural Landmark.

Next, we travel south along the Turnagain Arm, stopping along the way to examine evidence of how plate tectonics is shaping Alaska. We’ll spend 2 nights in Portage Valley, where we will base camp and hike to Byron Glacier and Portage Pass learning about glacial processes and forest succession. We’ll also make a stop in Whittier to discuss tsunami science and preparedness.

We will then head south to Seward. In Seward we will explore the Exit Glacier in Kenai Fjords National Park, discussing the effects of melting glaciers on Alaska. We will spend a day studying the coastal ecosystem of Resurrection Bay on a Kenai Fjord boat tour. Finally, after a lesson on tides and reading tide tables, we will hike out to Caines Head along the coastal trail. During the hike we’ll stop to discuss both natural science and the history of Fort McGilvray. Upon successful completion of all components, students will earn 1/2 high school science credit. Cost is $2400 and it is all inclusive. Students will receive a personal packing list that includes a personal sleeping back and sleeping pad. All food, transportation and lodging are included. Students will also receive their own personal natural science kit to use and keep. The price of the trip includes all lodging and meals, as well as the boat ride to Knik Glacier and the Kenai Fjords Glacier Cruise out of Seward.
